Mediterranean Red Starfish

The Mediterranean red sea star (Echinaster sepositus) is a visually striking and ecologically vital species native to the Mediterranean Sea and nearby waters. Distinguished by its vivid red or orange hue, this sea star typically has five slender arms, though some individuals may have more. It thrives in rocky reefs, seagrass beds, and depths ranging from shallow waters to over 200 meters. Beyond its striking appearance, Echinaster sepositus plays an important role in marine ecosystems, contributing to the balance of benthic communities by feeding on detritus, small invertebrates, and organic matter. Its bright coloration serves as a natural deterrent to predators, signaling its potential toxicity.
